Preventive Dentistry in Fairhope Helps You Smile for Life

Regular visits to the dentist can help prevent a wide variety of oral health problems over time, from cavities to gum disease to even tooth loss. At Fairhope Modern Dental, Dr. Knight emphasizes the importance of preventive care at every opportunity, and our team wants to give your smile all the support systems it needs to stay strong and healthy well into the future. Please contact us today if you or a loved one is overdue for a checkup and cleaning. We’d love to welcome you into our Fairhope, AL office!

Checkups & Cleanings

We strongly recommend that children and adults alike attend a checkup and cleaning every three to six months. Why? Because even the most diligent brushers and flossers can still end up with serious dental problems. Our team will take the time to review every aspect of your oral health – including the teeth, the jaw, the bite, the gum tissue, any existing restorations like fillings, and more – so that decay and damage are stopped dead in their tracks as early as possible. Our professional hygiene will also get rid of cavity-causing plaque and tartar, leaving smiles with a healthy polish.

Periodontal Therapy

Periodontal disease (also known as periodontitis) is an infection of the tissues (gums and jaw bone) that support your teeth. Gingivitis, if left chronically untreated, can progress to periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is the infection and inflammation of the gums and bone that support the tooth, which causes these tissues to break down. Over time, the support structure of the tooth can be severely weakened, causing loose teeth and eventual loss of tooth. Periodontitis is classified by the severity of bone loss.

Dr. Knight will work with you to treat periodontal disease and get your mouth and gums back to a healthy state. Sometimes, this treatment involves a deep cleaning of the gum tissue in which you will be numbed for comfort during the procedure.

Dental Sealants

Dental sealants are a simple, non-invasive, and painless service that can protect our patients’ pre-molars and molars (the back teeth) from the threat of cavities. These teeth have wide chewing surfaces and deep grooves/pits that can easily trap food particles. The sealant is a tough, plastic-based substance that attaches to the tooth and works as a barrier, preventing harmful bacteria from settling in place. Our team members usually recommend this service for children who are still learning how to brush and floss at home, but adults can benefit as well in certain circumstances.

Sports Mouthguards

Is anyone in your family a big athlete? It’s important to remember that your smile deserves as much protection as the head, elbows, and knees when physical contact is a possibility. Instead of grabbing a “one-size-fits-all” appliance off the shelf at the local sports store, consider investing in a custom-made sportsguard from Dr. Knight. Our devices are designed with the patient’s unique mouth and personality in mind, resulting in comfort, stability, and flexibility.

Nightguards for Bruxism

Has jaw pain become a regular part of your routine? Do your teeth seem damaged or worn down with no clear cause? These are likely indications of bruxism – teeth grinding in layman’s terms. Patients of all ages experience this “bad habit,” and many cases go undiagnosed for far too long because it usually only occurs at night during sleep. If. Dr. Knight notices worrisome signs during your checkup, he may recommend the use of a custom-made nightguard, or splint, from our practice. This oral appliance will protect teeth and mitigate any damaging forces.

Oral Cancer Screenings

Oral cancer affects nearly 41,000 Americans each year. Early detection is key so that treatment can be initiated as soon as possible.

Dr. Knight performs a thorough oral cancer screening at each visit, free of charge. The dentist will talk to you about your health history and visually inspect the mouth, jaw, neck, and throat. Regular visits to your dentist help ensure that any signs of oral cancer or any suspicious oral lesions will be caught early.

Fluoride Treatments

Over the years, countless studies and research projects have demonstrated a positive link between fluoride exposure and stronger, healthier teeth. At Fairhope Modern Dental, we want all of our patients to benefit from this valuable mineral, which is why our team offers professional fluoride treatments as an addition to checkups and cleanings. The process will only take a few minutes of your time; the fluoride solution is applied directly to the teeth or provided in liquid/tablet form. If you and your children only drink bottled water, this simple process can have big benefits!
