Why do I Have to Visit the Dentist Every Six Months?
More than a century ago, a group of dentists got together to decide how to address an epidemic that was preventing otherwise able-bodied men from entering the military during World War I. The epidemic was poor oral health. In fact, dental health concerns kept more people from entering the armed forces in the first world war than any other medical condition. The results of the research conducted by these dentists was simple – the easiest way to avoid debilitating oral health issues was to prevent them from ever happening. They recommend visiting a dentist twice a year to prevent the majority of these issues and diagnose others in their earliest stages. Since this time, the US has seen significant improvement in overall oral health. The American Dental Association continues to encourage patients to keep up with six month dental exams and professional teeth cleanings.
What Happens During a Dental Checkup?
During your dental exam at Fairhope Modern Dental, you can expect the following treatments:
- Diagnostics – we use the latest state-of-the-art digital x-rays and photography to capture images of your oral structures that will help us to diagnose conditions not readily apparent to the naked eye. These digital images are also a key element in helping our team explain your oral health concerns and treatment options. They allow you to see exactly what we see.
- Screenings – our dentists and dental care team will carefully examine your teeth and gums for signs of health concerns. We screen for a number of conditions, including tooth decay, gum disease, TMJ dysfunction, teeth grinding and clenching, and oral cancer.
- Consultations – you’ll sit down one on one with the dentist to discuss any oral health concerns we uncovered. We’ll be happy to answer your questions. Our team uses digital x-rays and photos to give you a clearer understanding of our findings and treatment recommendations. Before you leave the office, we’ll partner with you to create an ongoing plan to achieve and maintain your healthiest smile.
If I Brush & Floss, why do I Need Professional Cleanings?
Professional teeth cleaning is an important aspect of every biannual dental exam in our office. These cleanings allow our hygienists to remove plaque and tartar buildup that has accumulated in the smallest pits and grooves of your teeth. In fact, teeth contain small spaces where even a single toothbrush bristle will not fit, so professional removal is necessary. In just twelve hours, plaque buildup begins to harden into tartar (calculus) that has to be removed professionally, and despite the best efforts, most patients do experience some tartar accumulation between appointments.
